“I opened for my beloved, but my beloved had left; he was gone. My heart sank at his departure. I looked for him but did not find him. I called him but he did not answer.”
Song of Songs 5:6 NIV
Many times we are faced with misunderstandings that aren’t promptly resolved, they can cause serious damage in a relationship. The story told in this book tells us that the newlyweds had a misunderstanding.
After the consummation of the wedding…
The bride:
Is not only faced with the pain that her beloved is gone, but also blames herself for not having been awaiting his arrival.
According to the Bible, while she waits for him she is mistreated, bruised and stripped of her things.
This is always the case when trouble arises, it never comes on its own. It’s always one after the other and not only that but the enemy takes the opportunity to whisper all kinds of thoughts that threaten the beautiful relationship that joins us to God.
In this same way, the husband could have been flooded by thoughts and offers from “Delilah’s” to make him sway and get his attention.
Jealousy could have overpowered them both, they are capable of unleashing a series of uncontrollable and unpredictable actions. How many people have ruined their lives because they acted through jealousy and leaned on their own understanding.
The groom:
To him it wasn’t acceptable that his bride slept soundlessly, so much so that she wasn’t awaiting his return and didn’t hear his call. Which is why he left and didn’t wait for her to come to the door and open it.
We don’t know how angry they where with each other but there had to have been mutual forgiveness. the Bible tells us that due to this misunderstanding there came many waters, which means trouble, but it wasn’t enough to stop them loving each other.
Reconciliation
The power of love - “Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love, it would be utterly scorned.” Song of Songs 8:6-7 NIV
It is necessary to love and to remain in love to be able to bear it all for love. As soon as situations arise that cause pain or anguish, love will be put to the test and whoever doesn’t love genuinely won’t be able to resist the burden and will walk away from the one he or she is supposed to love.
To conclude the stages that mark our relationship with God through his son Jesus Christ, it is necessary to emphasize that in the life of the believer there will come a time in which we’ll be tested. Your love and my love for God will be tested because we’ll face circumstances that we can even begin to imagine, situations that humanly will cause us so much pain, maybe irreparable loss, where only God’s love and mercy will be able to console us. To many around us it might seem difficult to understand the fact that we are still serving God and still face hardships in life, they might even think that we’ll give up to our calling and stop following God.
However, God is telling us today that no matter what we go through in our lives, we must trust in Him and not in our own understanding.
God knows our heart and he knows what our reaction will be when we are faced with adversity, he already knows which one of us will withstand it and who will not. In spite of that God has chosen you not only to be a pillar for your family at home but also to your family of the faith, those who will be reached when you do the job you have been called to do for God.
Then you will realize that everything you have been through has not been in vain. You’ll be able to speak with authority of his word because he has ministered to your life first in the middle of your struggle. It is then when we truly get to know him just like Job did when he went through hardships and pain, at the end he was able to proclaim, “My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.” Job 42:5 NIV
We will also see clearly how he works in our lives in spite of the circumstances we may face, we will have the assurance that his word is true and our hearts will be comforted by an absolute peace that surpasses our own understanding and not only that but also inexplicable joy. Without Christ in our hearts is humanly impossible to experience peace and joy or even remain standing when we face trials, especially when we lose our loved ones. “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7 NIV
It’s not too late to start loving Jesus Christ the way God wants us too, he sent Jesus to us because he loved. Jesus gave his life on the cross voluntarily so that we may experience peace through his suffering. Right now we are in the stage of preparations for our encounter with our beloved Jesus, the way is clear, we know it won’t be easy to walk with God but it won’t be impossible if we trust that he will help us at all times and through all circumstances because that’s just how he loves us!
